AYR Breaks Ground for $200K School of Professional Journalism and Vocational Education in Zorzor District

In a groundbreaking moment for media and education in Liberia, Alternative Youth Radio (AYR), the only community youth radio station in the country, has launched the construction of a $200,000 multi-media School of Professional Journalism and Vocational Education in Zorzor District, Lofa County.

The event, held during AYR’s 8th-anniversary celebration, was graced by local and international guests, including USAID-Liberia Mission Director Jim Wright, who officially broke ground for the project.

A Vision for Capacity Building

AYR Founder and General Manager, James Papy Kwabo Jr., emphasized the school’s role in addressing Liberia’s human capacity challenges. The institution will offer advanced diplomas in journalism and communications while providing hands-on training for broadcast technicians. Future plans include the introduction of associate and bachelor’s degree programs.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kwabo detailed the scope of the project:

“The structure will span 450 square feet and feature a library, conference room, eight administrative offices, and 12 bathrooms. This facility will empower young Liberians with the skills they need to thrive in the media and vocational sectors.”

Community and Stakeholder Support

Kwabo also highlighted the community’s contributions to the project, which include:

  • Over 5,000 concrete bricks
  • 400 pieces of mixed steel rods
  • Four dump truckloads of river sand and crushed rocks
  • 100 bags of cement
  • Financial donations amounting to $315 USD and $50,000 LRD

“With the overwhelming support from the community, we aim to complete construction within two years,” Kwabo added.

USAID’s Endorsement

Jim Wright, USAID-Liberia Mission Director, lauded AYR’s achievements over the past eight years, calling the station a “shining example of community radio sustainability.”

“AYR’s innovations and commitment will not only transform Zorzor and Lofa County but also set a standard for others to follow,” Wright said. He commended Kwabo, a 2019 Mandela Washington Fellow, for embodying the program’s mission by driving impactful change in his community.

Praise from Internews and Local Leaders

Jefferson Massah, Deputy Chief-of-Party for Internews-Liberia, praised AYR for its foresight and contributions to the Liberian media landscape.

“AYR continues to set benchmarks among the 30 partner radio stations we work with. With just a little push, they can exceed expectations, as demonstrated by their innovations and partnerships,” Massah remarked.

Local leaders also expressed their support, with Zorzor Administrative Commissioner Hon. Paul R. Kalama pledging the administration’s commitment to ensuring the project’s success.

“AYR’s achievements in just eight years are extraordinary. This initiative will inspire the community, empower youth, and even uplift the elderly,” Kalama stated.

A Momentous Celebration

The anniversary and groundbreaking event drew a large audience, including local authorities, national and international partners, religious and traditional leaders, and enthusiastic youth and students.

As AYR embarks on this ambitious project, it reaffirms its mission to empower Liberia’s youth and advance the nation’s media and vocational sectors. The School of Professional Journalism and Vocational Education is set to be a game-changer, fostering innovation, education, and community development in Lofa County and beyond.
