Monrovia – In a vibrant ceremony held at the Ministerial Complex, James Papy Kwabo, the visionary founder of Alternative Youth Radio (AYR), was named the winner of the MoMo Heroes of Change 2024 award. The prestigious accolade, organized by Lonestar Cell MTN, comes with a cash prize of 2 million Liberian Dollars and honours individuals making transformative impacts in their communities.
Recognizing Changemakers
The MoMo Heroes of Change initiative celebrates social entrepreneurs across Liberia who are driving progress in areas such as health, education, youth development, women’s empowerment, and technological innovation. Among four other remarkable finalists, Kwabo’s groundbreaking work in community development earned him the top prize, underscoring his commitment to uplifting rural Liberia.
Transforming Lofa County
As the founder of AYR, a community radio station based in Zorzor, Lofa County, Kwabo has dedicated his life to empowering his community. Under his leadership, AYR has grown from a modest operation to a thriving media complex that amplifies local voices and provides employment and mentorship opportunities.
Kwabo’s initiatives extend beyond broadcasting. His agricultural facility and stationery shop, established to support AYR’s operations, generate income while creating jobs and offering essential services to the community.
Building for the Future
Kwabo’s most ambitious project to date is the construction of a state-of-the-art media and vocational education school in Zorzor. Valued at over $200,000 USD, the school will offer courses in journalism, technology, and vocational skills, addressing the educational and technical training needs of young people in the region.
“This school will empower the next generation of leaders and innovators, providing them with the tools to build a better future for themselves and their communities,” Kwabo said.
