Zorzor, Lofa County โ€“ April 10, 2025

Alternative Youth Radio (AYR) was honored to host the United States Ambassador to Liberia, H.E. Mark Toner, during his recent visit to Lofa County โ€” a moment that not only marked a high-profile diplomatic engagement but also reaffirmed the vital role of youth-led media in community transformation.

From Peace Corps to Diplomacy: A Full Circle Moment

Ambassador Toner, who once served in Liberia as a Peace Corps Volunteer, returned with a message of hope, inclusion, and partnership. He received a warm welcome from AYRโ€™s team and engaged with young journalists participating in the stationโ€™s flagship Four-Month Journalism Training Program.

During his tour of the station, Ambassador Toner met with:

  • James Papy Kwabo, CEO/Station Manager
  • Junior B. Kesselee, Program Director, for a one-on-one interview
  • Trainee reporters, who shared how AYR has impacted their lives

The Ambassador reflected on his early years in Liberia, calling them โ€œtransformationalโ€ and crediting those experiences with shaping his career in diplomacy.

A platform where youth speak and the world listens

At AYR, we believe that young people must not only be heard โ€” they must lead the conversations shaping their future.

With over 10 local programs aired and over 50 youth trained, AYR is now a recognized community media leader in Liberia. We have reported on:

  • Public health and education
  • Civic engagement and governance
  • Gender and youth participation
  • Climate and land issues

Ambassador Tonerโ€™s stop at AYR reinforces a simple truth: community media โ€” led by youth โ€” is a powerful tool for democracy, education, and hope.
