AYR is a community radio station based in Zorzor, Lofa County, Liberia. Beyond broadcasting, AYR is a platform for mentorship, training, and empowerment, providing opportunities for young people to achieve their dreams and contribute to their communities.
AYR was established in June 2016. It started in a shipping container and has since grown into a state-of-the-art media complex valued at over $50,000.
AYR’s mission is to empower young people through mentorship, training, and employment opportunities, while fostering community development and promoting professional journalism and vocational skills.
AYR provides hands-on training in journalism, broadcasting, business management, and community leadership. The upcoming School of Professional Journalism and Vocational Education, set to open in 2028, will train over 15,000 young Liberians.
AYR has transformed the lives of many young people by providing mentorship, training, and employment opportunities. Here are some of our most inspiring success stories:
- Anthony B. Sumo: Anthony was mentored in business management at AYR and now serves as the Director of Business while pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Lofa University.
- Gbolu Beyan: Gbolu joined AYR as a high school student and was mentored to become Station Manager. She now works with the Liberia Media for Democratic Initiatives (LMDI) in Monrovia as a debate moderator, facilitating critical national discussions.
- Junior Kessellee: Junior transitioned from working in illicit goldfields and charcoal mines to pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications at the United Methodist University, sponsored by AYR. Through the mentorship provided by AYR, he now serves as AYR’s Program Director and Deputy Station Manager.
- Ruth Pewee: Ruth, a single mother of three, started at AYR as a janitor and was promoted to Manager of AYR’s Stationery and School Supply shop. She now supports her children’s education and well-being, demonstrating AYR’s commitment to empowering women.
- Edwin Boakai: As trainee and later, a senior reporter at AYR, Edwin improved his skills and later founded Youth Action Lead-Liberia, an NGO focused on climate justice and youth development in Bong County. He recently secured a US$35,000 grant to address challenges posed by Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) in Liberia.
- Benjamin S. Lablah: From an intern to Director of News at AYR, Benjamin also served as a youth leader, becoming the current First National Vice President of the YMCA-Liberia Youth Council. His achievements include covering visits by high-profile leaders and influencing youth advocacy.
- James Yerkerson Forkpa: James rose from a quizzing competition organizer to a trainee and later, Senior Reporter and Director of News at AYR. He now works in national governance as a Special Assistant to a Representative of Bong County.
Yes, AYR sponsors team members for higher education. For example, Junior Kessellee is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications, and Anthony B. Sumo is studying Business Administration, both with AYR’s support.
