These success stories embody the core mission of AYR: to empower, mentor, and create opportunities for young people in Liberia. By providing the tools and guidance needed for personal and professional growth, AYR is shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

Here are some of the remarkable success stories that reflect our impact since 2016:

Gbolu Beyan

Gbolu Beyan

Gbolu Beyan joined AYR as a high school student and an intern. With dedicated mentorship and hands-on experience, she was promoted to Station Manager, leading key initiatives at AYR. Today, Gbolu is in Monrovia, where she works with the Liberia Media for Democratic Initiatives (LMDI).

She now serves as a debate moderator, facilitating critical discussions on national issues. Gbolu’s journey from a high school recruit to a respected figure in Liberia’s media is a testament to AYR’s commitment to nurturing local talents.

Junior Kessellee

Junior Kessellee

Junior Kessellee grew up in challenging conditions, working in the illicit goldfields and charcoal mines of Zorzor District to support his single mother and siblings. Recognizing his potential, AYR recruited and mentored him, providing opportunities to pursue education.

Today, Junior is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications at the United Methodist University, sponsored by AYR. He has also been promoted to Program Director and Deputy Station Manager at AYR, proving that with the right support, hard work pays off.

Stationery & Printing Services

Ruth Pewee

Ruth Pewee, a single mother of three, joined AYR as a janitor, determined to ensure her children had access to education. Her dedication and perseverance were rewarded when she was promoted to Director of AYR’s Stationery and School Supply shop.

Today, Ruth not only keeps her children in school but also provides for their well-being. Her story is a powerful example of how AYR creates opportunities for women to lead and thrive.

Edwin Boakai

Edwin Boakai

Edwin Boakai began his journey at AYR as an intern and later promoted to senior reporter between 2016 and 2017. The mentorship and training he received inspired him to establish Youth Action Lead-Liberia, an NGO focused on climate justice and community empowerment. Recently, Edwin secured a $35,000 grant from the Fund for Global Human Rights to implement a climate justice project in Bong County.

His initiative addresses the challenges posed by Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM), with a focus on educating young miners about safety, climate change, and legal frameworks. Edwin’s achievements highlight AYR’s role in fostering leaders who drive meaningful change.

Benjamin S. Lablah

Benjamin S. Lablah

Benjamin S. Lablah was recruited from high school and mentored at AYR, where he rose to become Director of News. As Director at AYR, he has covered high-profile events, including visits by former President George Weah and current President Joseph N. Boakai.

Benjamin’s leadership extended beyond AYR when he was elected First National Vice President of the YMCA-Liberia Youth Council. His journey from intern to influential leader underscores AYR’s impact on youth development.

James Yerkerson Forkpa

James Yerkerson Forkpa

James Yerkerson Forkpa was discovered by AYR during a quizzing competition in Zorzor. After receiving mentorship, he became Senior Reporter and later Director of News at AYR. He went on to work with prominent media outlets in Bong County, including Super Bongies and Premium FM.

Today, James serves as Special Assistant to a Representative of Bong County, blending his media expertise with national governance. His story demonstrates the far-reaching influence of AYR’s training programs.

Anthony B. Sumo

Anthony B. Sumo

Anthony B. Sumo joined AYR as a trainee in business management. With mentorship and guidance, he now serves as AYR’s Director of Business while pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Lofa County University.

Anthony’s story reflects AYR’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for young professionals.
