James Papy Kwabo Jr.
General Manager – CEO
James Papy Kwabo Jr. is a distinguished media expert, youth advocate, and communications professional with nearly two decades of experience within the public and private sectors as well as community development.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication with emphasis in Broadcasting , graduating Magna Cum Laude, from the United Methodist University, and a Master of Public Administration in Public Sector Management from Cuttington University School of Graduate and Professional Studies.
In 2024, James was nationally celebrated for his contributions to youth empowerment and community development, receiving the National MoMo Hero of Change Award from Lonestar MTN. Since 2019, he has served as a Peer Advisor Leader (PAL) for the U.S. Department of State-funded Pan-African Youth Leadership Program (PAYLP), implemented by Meridian International. PAYLP is a flagship initiative that unites African youth and educators for transformative exchanges in the United States. The program emphasizes leadership development, cultural exchange, and civic responsibility, empowering participants to implement impactful projects in their home communities. As a PAL, James plays a pivotal role in mentoring participants and amplifying their ability to drive change while at the same time,coordinating between the US Embassy in Liberia and the participants.
In 2019, James was among 700 selectees for the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship, chosen from a competitive pool of over 38,000 applicants across Sub-Saharan Africa. This esteemed program, organized by the U.S. Department of State, recognized his exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and community transformation. During the fellowship, he completed advanced Public Management training at Boise State University in Idaho, USA, further sharpening his leadership and organizational skills.
In 2017, James also represented Liberia at the Liberia-Colombia Youth Exchange Program, held in Bogotá, Colombia, and Zorzor, Lofa County respectively. This international initiative promotes collaboration and cultural understanding between youth in Liberia and Colombia, creating opportunities to share innovative ideas and best practices in community development, education, and cultural preservation.
As the Founder and General Manager/CEO as well as Secretary to the Board of Alternative Youth Radio (AYR), James has been a trailblazer in creating opportunities for young Liberians, particularly in Lofa County and other rural regions. Through AYR, he has provided employment, training, and mentorship to youths, empowering them to participate in Liberia’s media and communications sectors. Under his visionary leadership, AYR is evolving into a multimedia hub, fostering sustainable growth and innovation.
James is also an accomplished public speaker and community development advocate whose work has reshaped perceptions of rural Liberia. Since July 2005, he has been steadfast in his mission to empower youth and create positive change, earning him recognition as one of Liberia’s most impactful leaders.

Junior B. Kesselee
Program Director / Deputy Manager
Junior B. Kesselee serves as the Program Director and Deputy Station Manager at Alternative Youth Radio, overseeing all on-air activities and reporting directly to the General Station Manager.
He is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication and Management at the United Methodist University in Monrovia, Liberia. In 2022, he earned a Diploma in Journalism and Media Relations from the Peter Quaqua School of Journalism.
With over four years of media experience, Kesselee has received extensive training in journalism, peacebuilding, reconciliation, and career development. He has worked as a correspondent for Liberia Forest Media Watch, Kool FM, and Passion TV.
Passionate about empowering youth, Kesselee has volunteered with several organizations, including serving as Peace Club President for the YMCA Zorzor branch. His vision is to help his community thrive by creating opportunities for learning and growth.

Benjamin S. Labalah
News Director, AYR
Benjamin Saye Lablah is a dynamic youth leader and emerging journalist from Neegbin Town, Nimba County, now residing in Zorzor City, Lofa County. As the News Director at Alternative Youth Radio (AYR), Benjamin is making a significant impact by empowering communities through journalism and storytelling.
With a diploma from Zorzor Central High School (2021) and ongoing training at the Zorzor Rural Teacher Training Institute, Benjamin has built a strong foundation for his career. His passion for leadership is reflected in his role as the 2nd Vice President for Programs at the Liberia YMCA National Youth Council and as a mentee in the prestigious IREX Liberia Terry Memories Mentorship Program (2024/2025).
A recipient of the 2023 Executive Director Award at the Emerging Leaders Boot Camp and AYR Staff of the Year (2021), Benjamin continues to inspire others with his dedication, vision, and commitment to empowering youth through journalism and leadership.

Ruth Pewee
Director, AYR Stationery and Printing Services
Ruth Pewee is the Director of the Alternative Youth Radio (AYR) Stationery Supply and Printing Services, a subsidiary of AYR. She manages the shop’s daily operations and reports to the General Station Manager.
Starting her journey with AYR as a cleaner, Ruth’s resilience and dedication earned her promotion to Director. A graduate of Zorzor Central High School, she holds certifications in conflict resolution and peacebuilding with her desire to pursue advanced studies in business management.
During the 2023 Liberian General Elections, Ruth served as a Ballot Box Controller for the National Election Commission, promoting transparency and fairness.
Committed to professional growth and community empowerment, Ruth aligns with AYR’s mission to inspire innovation and provide opportunities for young people in Liberia.

Peter Kollie
Asset and Maintenance Director
Peter Kollie is an emerging journalist and media professional with over three years of experience. He serves as the Director of Assets and Maintenance at Alternative Youth Radio, where he oversees resource management and supports operational and on-air activities.
Peter holds a ‘C’ Certificate in Education from LICOSSES Mobile Teacher Training College and has contributed to platforms such as the Association of Liberia Community Radio, Wologizi Radio, and Rural Reporter News Network.
Recognized as the Best Staff of the Year (2023/2024) at Alternative Youth Radio, Peter is also dedicated to mentoring passionate youth, helping them build meaningful lives and contribute to their communities.
He is committed to using his skills in media and administration to promote youth empowerment and strengthen community-focused media in Liberia.
